“Somatic Recollections: A Pilgrimage to the Fertile Crescent of the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama”

By interspersing documentary footage, historical photographs, and freedom songs with her original artwork, poetry, and pictures, Rev. Martina reflects on a pilgrimage to her ancestral homeland, and the fertile crescent of the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama. This multimedia presentation explores how embodied self-care practices, such as artmaking, writing, music, and movement, can assist in managing the complex emotions that might arise when participating in such a pilgrimage. Following the presentation, participants will have an opportunity to make response art as they reflect on their own experiences of participating in a pilgrimage.
